Guided Exe Day Trip -
We use comfortable touring boats to complete the Exe circuit. We use the high tide to take us down the Estuary to Topsham. Enjoy your lunch in the Sun on the Estuary before returing up the historic Exeter ship canal. This a great introduction to touring kayaks and a fantastic way to try some of our boats out.

We have started to get the new Palm stock coming through. The cags are a few weeks off. So there is still time to grab a bargin as below.

Oh yes, one of the worlds most successful play boats has had a tweak and is now in the shop.
The Project X is the latest freestyle play boat from Wavesport and looks set to be a dominating force once again in the freestyle world. The main tweeks are the sliceier bow and stern making cartwheels easier and more balenced for a short boat. More volume around the knees and behind the cockpit for even bigger front and back loops, a faster hull with sharper rails for even better rail to rail transfer speed. Essential for big arial moves.
The awesome looking "white out" out fitting, is you guessed it, White with a nice rubber feeling. At first it looks all slippy but when sat in the boat it really holds in place and it'seasy to wipe down if it gets a bit mucky!

Upper Dart Map |

Steve from Nookie has made a map of the Upper Dart. The idea is that you can print it out, laminate it, or pop it in a map case, and take it with you on the river. Then should you ever get into difficulties, or end up helping out other people, you have a handy guide to where you are, and should you need it grid references to help guide in the back up.
Anyone who paddles the Upper should have on of these handy little maps with them. It doesn't take much effort to print it out, and its no extra weight or space to take it with you.

Wavesport Project X is coming.... |
|
Wavesports latest freestyle kayak, the Project X, is coming. Due to be available in the UK in January the Project X looks set to raise the bar for freestyle kayaks.
The Project X will be available in three sizes, 48, 56 and 64 and will be outfitted in wavesports new 'Whiteout' gear.
“The Project X represents a half-decade of freestyle research from the world’s top kayak design team,” explained Bryan Kirk, team manager for Wave Sport and top-ranked world freestyle championship competitor. “We have truly discovered a new benchmark in paddler control both on waves and holes, with absolutely no sacrifices,” he added.
The new boat is a major evolution of the original Project and homage to the legacy of the X, however it is not a melding of the two popular designs. With a completely new look, new aggressive performance features, and a blazing white outfitting system, this boat delivers the extreme whitewater performance for which Wave Sport is known.
According to Wave Sport’s lead designer, Robert Peerson, the progressive rocker shape of the Project X hull, combined with the new volume distribution, puts the Project X in new territory for performance and comfort. “The Project X is finely tuned to maintain speed, give explosive pop, offer easier release, and provide smooth control over any wave for easier execution of moves,” he said. “More volume has been added around the knees,
which allows for control, maximum comfort, and a slicier performance at the ends.”
In addition, new sizing options, combined with the improved volume distribution, give a broad range of paddlers even greater comfort and control. “It delivers in all whitewater conditions,” Peerson said.
The stunning “WhiteOut” outfitting system lets paddlers hit the rapids in a one-of-a-kind, dazzling all-white material. The unmistakable wallpaper logo pattern contrasts with the fabric for a visual that’s almost as much fun to stare at as it is to get in. The unique vinyl covering the seat, hip-pads, backband, and thigh braces is also water-repellant, meaning less dry time and better mildew control.
The Project X will be available from January 2011, and will cost £799.

The Exeter Uni Student Flower Pots Rodeo and Boater Exe races are still going ahead this Saturday. The Race (rodeo has been postponed due to low water levels) is open to any one over 18 with a solid roll and is happy on class 2 water.
Taking place over the afternoon and evening under big light and with a nice big sound system the races are greast fun. Nothing to serious and a massive party afterwards. All monesy being raised are going to DELTA, a charity working with Deaf people.
It cost £5.00 to enter and if you are not a BCU Member you will need to pay another £5.00 for event insurance.
After party at Exeters EX4 Nightclub with Jamthechannel DJ'S.

We are running a BCU 1*/Introduction to Kayaking day on Sunday the 21st November. A day packed with advice and coaching. We use top end equipment and qualified experienced coaches!
New taster dates have been announced for, Saturday October 23rd, Saturday November 6th and Saturday Novermber 20th. This is the perfect way too see if kayaking is for you and try a variety of boats with a qualified instructor. Booking Essential.
One to One instruction is still proving incredibly popular with Liam on the water most days. He prides himself on introducing people to the sport but with a wealth of experience he can also help intermediate paddlers tackle that particulary difficult stroke. Surf Kayak skills is a new website specifically for surf fans.
This website is dedicated to all things technique based in the world of kayak surfing. Written by members of the England Surf Kayak Team, including Glyn Brackenbury a BCU Level 5 Surf Coach, the website aims to provide a contemporary coaching manual that will help paddlers push their paddling to the next level. This could be linking bottom turns to top turns, or aerials to inverts, the site's content will be dictated by you the user, so there's no excuse not to learn something new.

Sevylor have now delivered the eagerly awaited new inflatable kayak the Yukon. Slightly larger then the Colorado and a bit heavier duty the Yukon looks set to be one of the best blow up kayaks we have seen for a while.
At just under 4 metres it has plenty of room for two adults. Included is a nice storage back at the stern, perfect for keepinga change of clothes and some grub in for when you pull up at that secret beach no one else can get too.
Neoprene side panels protect the tubes when paddling and make it a bit more forgiving on the hands if you hit the sides. The little splash deck covering at the front also helps keep the legs a bit drier. Inflatable seats maximise the comfort along with the higher back rests.

We would like to welcome Alex and Dan to the team.
If you pop in or phone us and hear a new voice or see a new face be nice, its early days for them!
Dan has a history in retail and is set to help us smooth things out with our ever expanding stock and stock control. This meens we should always have what you want. We are currently grooming him to discover his favourite kind of boating. Watch this space....
Alex has joined us for Saturdays and filling in we we fancy a day off! He currently paddles with Totnes canoe club (we met him trying to source a very rare drain bung for his dad). He does lots of volenteer coaching with the club helping out with the junior section. His knowledge is great for a young man and hes calm and collected. Hopefully this will brush off on the rest of us! (not much chance there Ewart!)

With the main event Kicking off at 5pm on Saturday 6th feb @ Mill on th Exe this should be a wicked event. theres 200 glow sticks to attach to competetors who will be perfoming all the latest and not so greatest moves and falling over in the Flower Pots play spot, all under massive lights curtesy of A Plant in Exeter.
There is an oppertunity to demo kayaks from Big Dog from around 2pm and GB Freestyle team member and ex local Sam Anderson will be on hand to help out with all those tricky mc fallovers you all ways wanted to nail.

We've added some exciting new fast touring kayaks to our website. The Kayak pro Nemo and Namu, both designed by South west resident and boat designer extraordinaire Rob Feloy.
The Nemo is designed as an ultra fast sea and touring kayak, that also complies with Sea Kayak racing regulations. Speed is definitely the key with the Nemo, if you want to do some rock hopping, or even intend to land on a few rocky beaches, then you'd better look elsewhere, but if you want to get from A to B as fast as possible and not have to lugg about a heavy boat, then this is the boat for you. The Nemo is made from a Full Carbon/Kevlar sandwich construction, and is fully vacum bagged and heat cured for the ultimate in lightweight and stiffness. The Nemo weighs in at an amazing 15.5kg! It comes with a easy to use and smooth to operate Smart track rudder system, two hatches with bulkheads, and an adjustable composite Italian style race seat.
The Namu is shorter and wider than the Nemo, but shares much of the same features. Designed to be stable and easy to paddle, but still quick and effortless the Namu is a great Recreational and light touring kayak. It is suitable for paddlers all the way from beginners upwards, and comes in a range of sizes to accommodate all sizes. The Namu is available in two different constructions, either the Light weight 'Racer' construction the same as the Nemo or in a 'club' construction, made from a Glass sandwich, but also Vacum bagged and Heat cured. The Namu has all the same great features, a smart track rudder system, two hatches and and adjustable composite Italian style seat.

The BBC Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton is currently paddling a Kayak Pro Nemo down the Amazon, to raise money for sport relief.
Helen Skelton is attempting to become the first woman ever to solo kayak the Amazon River in aid of Sport Relief. You can tracking her amazing 2,010 mile journey here. If you’re inspired by Helen’s amazing feat, rise to a challenge of your own by doing the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile.

BBC TV presenter Ben Fogle has been working his way around the UK in the Series Country Tracks. Last nights episode saw Ben start off in South Devon with some Kayak Fishing. Ben can be seen paddling an Ocean Kayak Big game whilst fishing off of the south Devon coast at Exmouth. Ben Met up with Fly fishing guru Nick Hart, to get some expert tips. Nick was paddling a Native Watercraft Manta Ray 14. All of the paddling gear was loaned to them by us here At AS Watersports.

Flower Pots Student rodeo Sat 6th Feb |

The first student rodeo is coming up really soon at the Mighty Flwoer Pots play hole at Mill on the Exe in Exeter.
Dispite being a student event any one over the age of 18 is able to compete. Held in the evening this should be one heck of an event and subsiquent party! A traditional kayak rodeo that is just as much about fun as technical moves with all proceeds going to the Sport Relife charity.

More new Palm equipment |

Do the Guys and Girls at Palm equipment ever have time to sleep? It feels like hardly a month goes by without some new product winging its way to us from them.
This month we have two new products. Firstly a new entry level Dry cag, the Velocity. The Velocity is based on the hugely popular semi-dry Vertigo cag. It features full latex seals at wrist and neck, with adjustable neoprene outers, a twin waist system, the inner has a draw cord and the outer waist has large velcro tabs. It's made from lightweight, breathable and fully taped ripstop material. It's ideal for paddlers who are after an entry level dry cag, or for paddlers wanting a dry cag for warmer conditions.

Also out this month, Palm have a HMS style screw gate Karabiner. Its a classis 'pear' shaped HMS karabiner, wider at one end. Its ideal for all rescue situations, and a must in any pin kit.

The Canal and river Exe freeze |

Unless you live in a foreign country you can't have failed to notice that its cold at the moment. So cold in fact that the River Exe has started to freeze up. It's not too uncommon to see the Exeter ship canal start to ice up, but it's not very often that the river does.

New, new and new! |
|
The Weather may finally have dried up here in the Southwest, and the rain may have stopped falling outside, but inside the shop it's raining new gear. We've got two new kayaks, a throwline belt and some toasty warm new boots!
First up we have the all new 2010 Pyranha Burn. Pyranha have taken their tried and tested Creek boat the Burn and made some subtle but significant changes. The rocker profile has been tweaked, to help create a faster boat, that still boofs well, the rails have been lifted to make it less likely to catch an edge, but still carve into and out of eddies, the Knee bumps have been smoothed and lowered to help avoid bashed knuckles when paddling, the cockpit rim has been lowered to make it easier to roll and the deck profiles have been altered ever so slightly to improve re-surfacing and water shedding.
Even with the 'old' Burn and the 2010 Burn side by side it takes a while to spot all these changes, they are that subtle. It's not going to feel like a whole new boat, but the little changes will all add up to a boat that is just that little bit better than its all ready good predecessor.

Next up we have the new Pyranha Rebel Junior kayak. Designed for the smaller paddler, the Rebel offers everything that the rest of the Pyranha range has, but in a boat that is tailored to younger and smaller kayakers. The Rebel features a full plate footrest, whitewater quality grab handles and rescue point and adjustable hip pads and backrest.

The HF Swifty rescue belt is a quick release waist belt for carrying towlines. It features a large quick release front buckle, for easy adjustment, and fast removal, and a double ended quick release strap for attaching a throwline, meaning that its easy to get your throwline out, with either your left or right hand. And finally we've got the Palm Kola boot, just what you need to keep your feet warm in this cold weather. Made from 5mm plush lined double glued and blindstiched neoprene, with internal taping to keep your feet warm and dry. More River level Webcams |
|
More river level webcams, and this ones a Belter! Over looking the weir on the River Tavy in the middle of Tavistock. The webcam comes complete with a level gauge across the bottom so you can check hourly waterlevels to see if it's rising or falling.
The Tavy is a great river to paddle, with Three sections that are worth checking out. Above Tavistock are two sections the, highest 'The Cleave' featuresa an epic walk in, and some great class 4+ whitewater, but the river needs to be big, then the classic, 'Hill bridge' sections is a great class 3 paddle, a good step up from the Dart Loop. Below the weir there is one section, down to Denham bridge, that is a great great class 2(3) paddle which is good at almost any level and a great alternative to the Dart Loop.

Adventure paddlers weekend at River Dart Country Park |

Its almost time for what is becoming the best White water event in the South West.
The APWE hosted by Gene 17 kayaking at the River Dart Country Park is a great weekend of Paddling, friends and entertainment. Along with the adventure travel forums where you can meet other like minded people to disscuss any future boating plans or pass on any tips. There is the Saturday night video show. This plays host the hottest paddling films out or nearly out now.
This year you get: Olaf Obsommer, with a film all about his travels to Sumatra in Indonesia.
Below and beyond Mach Picchu, new runs in Peru including canyons and jungle.
British Universitys Kayak Expedition to Vietnam.

It's almost that time of year again, it's now less than a month till this years South west Canoe Show.
This years show will be bulging at the seams with all the usual South West Canoe show goodness. We've got Free Demos, Hog Roast, Talks and lectures, Coaching/course/holiday providers as well as loads of canoes, kayaks, sit on tops, equipment and accessories, all mixed in with a range of new products, fresh on the UK and world market, includeing the first UK chance to try two new models from Ocean kayak.

We've just had our first Big dog Flux and Force delivered, and they look great!
The Force (the orange one!) is a semi planning hulled river runner/creek boat. It has loads of volume, and a nice peaked deck to aid re-surfacing, rails that will enable it to carve into and out of eddys as well as track well. Its fitted with 5 tough alloy grab handle/attachment points, internally it has a tough and stiff rotomoulded seat and bow pillar, full plate footrest and a ratchet adjustable backrest. The Flux (the yellow one!) is a true all rounder, with a playful planning hull and river runner style deck volume. A great one boat solution, it'll get you down hard whitewater, yet will still allow you to play, surf and spin along the way. Kayak Fishing demo day this weekend! |

Just a quick reminder that it's our Fishing Kayak demo day this Saturday, the 9th of May, on the Piazza outside the shop. We will have a fleet of demo kayaks from Ocean kayak, Wilderness systems and Perception, as well as a range of Fishfinders from Hummin Bird. All of this is on top our our own demo range, which includes, Dagger, Islander, Pyranha, Perception, Native, Venture and many more.
Plus it's also the UK launch of the all new Perception Catch 390 fishing Kayak.

Sweet Prophecy cags have arrived |

We now have the very slinky new Sweet Prophecy Cags in Stock. The Prophecy is made from super lightweight, and super breathable Gore-tex Fabric. It Features Latex wrist and neck seals, with outer neoprene protection on the neck seal and Velcro adjustable around the wrist seal, a deep neoprene waist tube, with Velcro adjuster, a double entry pocket on the chest, and a pocket on the sleeve.
They are available in the Scorch Red colour, and the Sassy Green colour. You can buy them through our shop site HERE

New 2009 Sweet Protection Helmets arrive |

We've just opened up the first delivery of the New 2009 Sweet protection helmets. We've not received all of our stock yet, but there's more than enough to get excited about.
We've received the 2009 Rocker Fullcut, in both the M/L and L/XL sizes and in Rescue Yellow, Sassy Green, Gloss White and Dirt Black.
We've also received some of our 2009 Strutters, in S/M, M/L and L/XL, but we've only received the Hot Pink and Sassy Green colours so far.
The New colours look amazing, especially the Hot Pink! The Sassy green looks good in both the Strutter and Rocker. Now we've just got to wait for the next box load.......

Confluence Watersports CEO Visits Our Shop |

We were very lucky this week to have some Genuine VIP guest in the shop. Whilst on a tour of UK Manufacturers and importers the President and CEO of Confluence Watersports, Sue Rechner, popped into our shop, in order to meet some English retailers.
Confluence Watersports is one of the biggest Paddle-sports manufactures in the World. Based in the USA they are responsible for Wilderness systems, Perception kayaks USA, Dagger kayaks USA, Wavesport kayaks, Mad River Canoes, Harmony accessories and AT Paddles. They also have very strong links with Dagger Europe, Perception UK and WWC the importers for Wavesport, Wilderness, Harmony and Mad River. |
