The One Day Introduction to Kayaking course works well as a follow on from our free taster sessions. The course allows you to develop further the basics of paddle sport.
During the day the course will cover:
Equipment for the paddler:
Equipment for the paddler: Most courses start with a run down of the equipment you will be using for the day. It gives you a chance to familiarise yourself with the equipment and an opportunity to set the boats up for you to ensure a correct fit and comfort. |

The correct paddle, buoyancy aid and other kit will also be selected to fit you.
Safety features of the equipment will also be covered.
What to take on the water:
What to take on the water: Different paddling disciplines require different equipment and accessories. This will be discussed and the correct items selected.
Details:
Location: Exeter Ship Canal and River Exe. These locations are selected for their good facilities and points of local interest. Their accessibility makes them the ideal place for beginners.
What to bring: We will provide the boats, paddles, PFD’s wetsuits and splash jackets. Please bring lightweight clothing such as walking trousers and fleeces. DO NOT wear jeans and t-shirts. Any other outdoor clothing may be suitable, such as thermal layers if you have them.
If you have your own paddling kit then please bring it along.
Lunch and snacks are not provided. Please bring enough food and drink for a day out. A flask of hot drink is recommended if the weather is cold. |

Paddling!
In this section we will be covering how to control your boat, turning, stopping and of course forward paddling.
We will also cover the basics of edging, body position and support strokes.
Safety and rescue:
We will discuss safety aspects such as paddling conditions and suitable locations. The basics of self, group and 1-2-1 rescues will be introduced through demonstration. However it will not be essential to complete all these techniques as this is an introductory course. A capsize drill is encouraged but by no means compulsory.
