Web cams and E.A. live river level gauges
Exe bridge web cam
This web cam overlooks the River Exe at the Exe bridge, next to the Anchor Inn, high in the Exe valley. This is just down stream of the confluence of the River Exe and the River Barle. There is no Gauge here, it is just a visual indication of the river levels.
Thorverton weir Web cam
This web cam has been provided by the Environment Agency in association with the BCU and shows the level of the Exe at the Gauging weir at Thorverton (half way between Tiverton and Exeter). It gives a good general idea of the levels in the Exe and is worth looking at before traveling. Note that the Culm enters below the gauge so there may be more (or less) water at pots than we think. Please keep an eye on the readings and levels, and we will update this guide as you inform us and as we learn more.
E.A. Live river level gauges
Exwick - Exeter
Thorverton weir - Lower Exe
Tiverton - Middle Exe
From our initial monitoring of the Thorverton weir web cam the following readings equate to the following levels:
| 7.5 - 9 on the gauge = Good chunky hole at pots, Generally Medium / High on the Exe. |
| 5.5 -7.5 on the gauge = Line stopper with weird wave in the middle. Generally Medium. |
| 5.5 on the gauge or less = Not much happening at pots. Generally Low. |
| 4.5 or less = River Exe very low. Squirt boating at the Pots |

River Lyn |
River Lyn Rockford Inn, Brendon Webcam
This Webcam overlooks the river Lyn at Rockford, between Brendon and Watersmeet. Ideal for Checking everyones favourite hardcore Exmoor day out. The Lyn is a Great Class 4 (4+) steep narrow and technical run.
River Lyn Watersmeet, Stop/Go webcam
This webcam is under the foot bridge at Watersmeet. Mounted on the bridge pillar is a red/green stop go marker. If the water is in the green section of the marker, then the river is high enough to paddle. If the water is in the red section of the marker, the river is too low. Simple!

River East Okement |
| |
The East Okement is a steep technical class 4 creek run that involves a walk in and requires good whitewater skills. The River starts with possibly the best slides in England (?)
The general consensus on levels for this run is that it needs to read .55 on the Fatherford gauge to make the jounrey worth while. This run is usually saved for very wet days.

River Erme |
| |
The River Erme is a Dartmoor classic. This steep, tight and technical run offers great class 4 creeking. The classic gorge section can be paddled with a short walk in and out, and no need to run a shuttle. Or for a longer trip put in at Harford bridge and paddle all the way to Ivy bridge. With Lots of water the Erme becomes a serious undertaking, with continuous rapids and big holes!

River Walkham |
| |
The Walkham is a river of two parts. The upper section needs plenty of water, and is an action packed class 4/5 tree and boulder strewn run, for creek boaters only! The lower section, all the way down onto the Tavy is a scenic and fun class 2/3 run, slowly getting harder, until the final class 3 rapid spits you out onto the Tavy.

Above Tavistock there are two sections of river, 'The Cleave' has a long walk-in and is class 4+ only good when the river is in spate. Then the classic middle section offers great class 3- 3+ (4 in higher levels ) paddling from Hill Bridge, and below the weir a great class 2/3 paddle that is good at all levels.

River Dart |

Dart Webcam- Pyranha Dartcam is now live.
Note on webcam use: The Dart webcam is situated down stream of the Anvil play hole by the "school rapids" within the RDCP. The levels shown here may not represent what is happening up stream. It could be higher or lower and should be used as a guide only. For example rising water levels upstream may take 3 hrs to reach the webcam.
Looking over the River Dart at Buckfastleigh this new webcam gives a great live veiw of water levels on the lower sections of the Dart. Great for paddlers planning to paddle to Buckfastleigh, or paddling on down to Staverton.

Water Level:
Low.
The fishing season has now started.
kayaking on the river Dart Facebook group
Because the levels can change so much through out the day we are no longer going to put a water level here unless it's stable and confirmed.
We will offer predictions and opinions but do not take these for granted.
Use the Webcams, weather forecasts and Environment Agency gauges to work out likely water levels.
If it has been raining then there is more chance of water. During winter dry periods of a week or so it will need 10-20mm in the 6 hours prior to paddling for levels to reach the Slab at Newbridge. This is a recognised base level. Visit UK RiversGuideBook for more info on this.
During summer months it usually takes more rain to get it going.
The Dart can rise and fall quickly. The Upper Dart takes between 1- 3 hours to react to heavy rainfall higher on the moor. If the Hexworthy gauge (above) is showing rising river levels expect the Upper Dart to start getting that water 1 hour from the time shown on the EA Gauge.
Water arriving at Dartmeet water then usually takes about an hour to reach Newbridge. During periods of heavy rain this level may take an hour to get there but when it does the level can rise rapidly! It has been known to rise over 1 metre in 30 mins. So you can get on with it at a level you are comfortable with and it change dramatically whilst paddling.
The difference in levels between Newbridge and the River Dart Country Park ( Loop Section) can be between 1-3 hours.
If you ring the shop we are happy to offer our opinion and predictions for water levels but please do not rely on them.
Check the webcams and gauges for all the latest.
