Topsham Lock cottage offers suitable accommodation for Field studies, Bird Watchers, Cyclist’s, Walkers, Artists and Watersports Enthusiasts.

The Exe Estuary is a must for anyone interested in natural history and is recognised as being a wildlife habitat of international importance.

For bird watchers there are two separate areas of coastal grazing marsh on opposite sides of the estuary; Exminster Marshes and Bowling Green Marsh. In the spring breeding lapwings and redshanks can be seen here. In winter there are thousands of ducks, geese and wading birds roosting and feeding, such as curlews, lapwings, black-tailed godwits and wigeons. Hundreds of avocets can also be seen on the estuary in winter.

For cyclists and walkers a purpose built traffic free cycle/walk way runs along the canal through to Exeter city.

For canoeists the canal and the river offer many hours of exploration.

Topsham Lock Cottage is remotely Located on the canal bank between the river Exe and Exeter canal opposite Topsham. The cottage offers a good base for field studies in this interesting and historic area.

Self-contained accommodation for up to 6 people with a main room for living and dining, separate kitchen and bathroom with toilet, a twin bedroom upstairs and a four-bed bunk room downstairs.

Duvets and pillows are provided, but guests should bring their own sleeping bags/duvet covers, bed linen, pillowcases and towels.

The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils; an electric cooker, microwave oven and fridge/freezer. Lighting and hot water are included in the charge.

Not suitable for young children. Pets are not permitted in the cottage.

Local Facilities: Close at hand is the ferry to Topsham, where there are excellent local shops, pubs, restaurants and also the Topsham Museum.

Within easy reach along the canal you have The Turf Lock Pub and in the other direction Double locks Pub.

The White Heather Ferry runs a regular service on the canal.
