Wetsuits come in a wide variety of types, and there many other garments that use the same principles of wetsuits, these include footwear, hoods and gloves.
The following types of wetsuits that are available are:
A "long John" is the most common wet suit type for kayaking as it allows unrestricted movement of the shoulders
A "Full Suit" covers the whole body, arms, neck, torso and legs. Most full suit wet suits are made for scuba divers and surfers who do not require the same amount freedom in terms of motion as kayakers do. A full suit may be more suitable if you are sea kayaking. But make sure that you go for a full suit that has extra elasticity in the shoulder area to ensure that your paddling is not inhibited in any way.
A "Shorty" is like a full suit but has short arms and legs. This garment is good for the summer season but provides less protection from the cold if used in the colder months.
Additional garments such as a cags or thermal layers are best worn with a wetsuit. |
