HIRER INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

Our intention is that as a hire customer of AS Watersports you should have a really enjoyable paddling session and to help you and us achieve this we like to operate with these conditions and recommendations.

Exeter kayak hire Where to go and safe areas to paddle

Please stay within the Exeter Canal or the River Exe between the Mill on the Exe and Trews Weir.
Do not attempt to paddle over any weirs. You will be in breach of your agreement with us and you will be putting you and others people’s lives at risk. Both weirs are powerful even in low water so please don’t venture too close. If you are in any doubt of any geographic location please ask us for confirmation.

A two hour hire is enough time for most people to reach the Double Locks and get some refreshments and return within your hire period. A full day hire from 10am – 4pm can be enough for some to reach the Turf Locks in at the far end of the canal and return.

Please be back on time or an additional charge may be incurred. For full day hire all boats must be back by 4pm.

Please note: For security reasons we require some form of ID: we accept Credit and debit cards, valid passports, Armed forces ID cards, a valid Full UK driving license and other international ID cards.

SAFETY ON THE WATER

Please paddle within your capabilities.

Personal Floatation Device (PDF)
Please wear the ones provided when you are on or near the water. This is for your safety.

Recommended Clothing
We recommend that you wear some kind of footwear, though not wellies, as there is sometimes glass around near the pubs. It is also safer for re-entry to your boat as the banks can be slippery at all times of year. Please wear suitable clothing for the weather conditions.

Children
You must be 18 or over to hire a craft. All under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult, on a one adult to a maximum of two children ratio. No children under the age of 8 years old.

Contact
We highly recommend that you take a mobile phone with you as a means of contact if any problems arise. A waterproof plastic tub is provided for this exact purpose, there will also be an additional copy of this document, with our contact detail on and a map of the canoe loops. We are not responsible for any damage or loss of items placed in the tub.

Protecting the Hire Craft and Hired Equipment
Please do not drag any boat, you will have been shown how to lift and carry these, if in any doubt please ask for assistance. Please keep paddles with the craft and avoid abrading the buoyancy aid on rough surfaces or sitting on them (this damages the foam).

You are responsible for the craft while its in your care for the hire period. Do not leave it unattended or out of site. Take you paddles and buoyancy aids with you where ever you go and keep the boat in sight at all times.

Wildlife
Please respect all wildlife, and take special care regarding swans and waterfowl especially at breeding times.

Other Water Users
Again please respect other users and in the case of motor boats or professional water users (including racing kayaks and rowers) please keep well clear and to the right when they are approaching. If you suffer any problems with abuse or potentially dangerous activities please do not hesitate to report this to us. Give anglers space and watch out for lines.

Alcohol
We strongly advise that you or anyone with you on the water does not consume alcohol. Users should use the same common sense with alcohol as if driving.

Help or Emergency
If you or anyone with you is in need of serious non-urgent help please call us on the number given with the waterproof tub. In the event of illness, injury or life threatening incidents please immediately call the emergency services on 999 with details of the incidents and your location and that you have a hired craft from AS Watersports.
